چکیده

This paper presents a set of phonetics teaching resources as modules in a more generic framework for web-based tutoring in the areas of phonetics, multimedia communication and spoken language research. Currently the toolkit consists of standalone interactive modules and lecture notes on a number of areas of phonetics, phonology and the lexicography of spoken language. The interactive presentation includes interactive Java and CGI tools for waveform generation and display, database access, phonetic alphabets, stylised articulatory phonetic animations with and without underlying phonological models, development and testing of syllable models, construction of web-based hyperlexica and basic techniques for visual and speech synthesis. This paper will present the underlying motivation, the computational linguistic and phonetic modelling and demonstrate the actual use of these tools as phonetic teaching resources.

(what Is) the Contribution of Phonetics to Contemporary Speech Synthesis Research

Kurzfassung: Recent advances in speech technology have significantly reduced the necessity for traditional phonetic system components or phonetic expertise, e.g. rule-based prosody models. We therefore need to ask the question, whether and how phonetics ought to play a role in ongoing and future speech synthesis development. The answer can be derived directly from a global analysis of the weakn...

Toward an embodied and embedded phonetics

The complementary themes of physical embodiment and environmental embedding, though frequently touted as bases of human cognition, have not been recognized explicitly in models of phonetics. We explore these concepts more fully as they apply to phonetics, seeking a theory based on richer, higher-dimensional models of both the human body and the human environment. In contrast with previous model...

Interaction and representational integration: evidence from speech errors.

We examine the mechanisms that support interaction between lexical, phonological and phonetic processes during language production. Studies of the phonetics of speech errors have provided evidence that partially activated lexical and phonological representations influence phonetic processing. We examine how these interactive effects are modulated by lexical frequency. Previous research has demo...

Comparing Instructional Reinforcements in Phonetics Pedagogy

This study contrasts different instructional reinforcements in the teaching of phonetics, i.e., learning tasks that supplement a classroom lecture on a phonetic contrast. 152 introductory linguistics students were split into four groups, each of which received the same lecture but a different instructional reinforcement, as follows: (1) a baseline textbook-style handout explaining the contrast,...
